Rwandan Gorilla Project

The Rwandan Gorilla Project (RGP) is an initiative organised to raise money for IGCP by some of our friends in the finance world. It provides:

  • A way to support specific in-the-field IGCP initiatives that have been thoroughly validated by independent business professionals,
  • A means for them and others to pool their financial resources so that collectively they can make a real difference,
  • An exclusive safari package for donors to see their money in action, and
  • Accountability through ongoing communications and updates.

The three initiatives that are being funded focus on facilitating the co-existence of humans and mountain gorillas around the Virunga volcanoes in northwest Rwanda. Rwanda has been chosen not only because it has a critical need but also because it is now emerging as a frontier destination for upmarket tourism. The three specific projects being supported are:

  • The completion of a buffalo wall to stop crop raiding by buffalos thereby reducing park-human conflict,
  • Alternative income generation through honey production to reduce pressure on land use around the park, and
  • The provision of clean permanent water for local communities.
